Kim Bonenberger, a spokeswoman for the science center, told Channel 11 that staffers were being trained in the Works Theater to give a demonstration.
“There was a gas explosion during the training,” she said.
Toler said one employee was checked by medics but was determined to be OK.
Bonenberger said the building had smoke damage and a restoration company would be brought in Tuesday.
She said it’s unclear whether the Carnegie Science Center will open Tuesday. An advisory will be posted on the center’s website if it's unable to open at its regular time.

President Obama, Raul Castro engage in 'awkward' handshake
Mar 21, 2016 07:21 PM EDT
President Barack Obama's historic visit to Cuba, as the first sitting president to do so in almost 90 years made news for a number of reasons.
But the main thing so many paid attention to was the seemingly awkward handshake between Cuba's leader and Obama.
After the leaders each gave statements to the press Monday afternoon about their meeting, President Raul Castro appeared to turn what was going to be a standard handshake into an odd arm-raising move.

Video from KSAZ shows that the two did briefly shake hands before the awkward handshake, though.

“They knocked on the door and they heard a baby in the background, and then they kicked the door in,” Butler City police Chief David Adams said.
Authorities said the men got into the home, pinned down the child’s mother and threatened her and the baby, who is under the age of 1.
“They said they’d hit her with the baseball bat and then they threatened that they would use the baseball bat on the baby's head,” Adams said.
The mother’s screaming and the child’s crying spooked the men, who ran off with nothing, police said.
“Yeah, they're dangerous, and we need the public’s help in finding them,” Adams said.
Anyone who recognizes the man in the surveillance image or has information about the home invasion is asked to contact Butler City police.
Doodle 4 Google: High schooler's Afrocentric art wins competition
Mar 21, 2016 05:51 PM EDT
A high school sophomore inspired by her African American roots won Google's 2016 Doodle 4 Google contest, the company announced Monday.
For this year's competition, Google asked young artists to doodle around the theme “What Makes Me... Me.”
The company announced Akilah Johnson and her Afrocentric doodle won the national competition on Monday. Her art went live on Google's U.S. homepage during a press conference at the company's California headquarters.
Akilah, a student at Eastern Senior High School in the District of Columbia, said she was inspired by her time at Roots Public Charter School and Roots Activity Learning Center, both in northwest D.C.
“We regularly celebrated important African American people and I learned a lot about my history as an African American,” she wrote in a blog post for Google. “As I grew older, I realized that the black people that came before us had made us into what we are today. So of course I had to include them in my doodle.”
Akilah wanted her doodle to be accessible while exploring childhood themes and reflecting on society, she said.
“My goal with my art was to not only turn heads but souls as well -- not only for someone to see it and be amazed by it but also to have them understand and connect with it,” she said. “Everything surrounding the word 'Google' depicts my characteristics.”
As the winner of the Doodle 4 Google Competition, now in its eighth year, Akilah won a $30,000 scholarship for college, a $50,000 Google for Education grant for her school, a Chromebook, an Android tablet and a t-shirt printed with her doodle. The company also flew Akilah and four other Doodle 4 Google contestants to Google's headquarters in Mountain View.
She won over submissions from 100,000 people across the country and in Puerto Rico, Guam and D.C.
“I'm excited to keep creating art that matters,” she said.
Social media suggests humorous names for newest Air Force stealth bomber
Mar 21, 2016 05:38 PM EDT
The U.S. Air Force is asking for help via Twitter to "name our bomber for the 21st Century," unsurprisingly, social media has responded with some unique suggestions.
The Air Force announced the new bomber in February, which had been called the Long-Range Strike Bomber. Following the announcement, the Air Force created a contest limited to active duty Air Force members only (including reservists, dependents, retirees and Air National Guard) to help come up with a two word name for the estimated half billion dollar aircraft.

According to the rules, the winner of the contest "will have the prestige of naming the Air Force newest bomber and will be highlighted on af.mil. The participant may also be selected to attend the Air Force Association’s Air & Space Conference and Exhibition in September 2016 to be acknowledged by Air Force leadership."
Despite the contest being limited to members of the Air Force only that didn't stop people from replying with some of their own suggestions (below).
Pittsburgh police sergeant still on paid leave despite having charges dropped against her
Mar 21, 2016 05:37 PM EDT
A Pittsburgh police sergeant remains on paid administrative leave despite charges filed against her in connection with an incident at River’s Casino being dropped, Target 11’s Rick Earle learned Monday.
The Fraternal Order of Police union said the case against the officer was dismissed, and she should be allowed to return to her job.
FREE APPS | NOW | FACEBOOK | TWITTER
At the River’s Casino on the North Shore in November, a Pittsburgh police sergeant attempted to enter the casino after, according to her attorney, she had put her name on the self-exclusion list that bars people from the establishment. The list is meant for people with gambling problems.
State police then filed a summary citation for trespassing against the sergeant, but the charge was dismissed in December.
“Why this officer remains on administrative leave with pay is beyond me because I don't know of any active investigation that is taking place,” police union attorney Bryan Campbell said.
Campbell told Earle Monday the union has been given no reason for the officer’s leave, and he argued she should be returned to her job immediately.
The police department’s public information officer said in an email to Target 11 that the chief would not be commenting on the situation.
Meanwhile, Campbell, who believes this is the first time an officer has been placed on leave for a summary offense, said the union plans to either file a grievance or take the city to court to force them to reinstate the officer.
“The FOP thinks it's a situation where its waste of taxpayer money because these people could be working,” Campbell said.
The police union attorney said the citation issued to the officer is similar to a traffic ticket, and he wants to know if the city will begin suspending officers who get traffic citations.
When reached Monday, the mayor’s press secretary also had no comment on the situation.
Parents: Relax! It's just a game; Sign reminds overbearing adults to lighten up
Mar 21, 2016 04:44 PM EDT
Lots of parents become sideline coaches and their children's biggest critics when they attend school and extracurricular activities or sports events.
They scream and shout, offering pieces of advice to the youngsters as they run to the next base, go for the next layup or aim to take the next shot.
But a sign posted outside a Pleasanton Little League game in Texas serves as a reminder to parents that a game is just a game.
The sign reads:
"Reminders from your child:
- I'm just a kid.
- It's just a game.
- My coach is a volunteer.
- The officials are humans.
- No college scholarships will be handed out today."
While the sign carries a serious message, it ends with a lighthearted, "Thank you and have fun!"
A photo of the sign has spread rapidly on social media platforms.

Mar 21, 2016 04:36 PM EDT
The Allegheny County Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a woman and a child who they said are involved in a parental child abduction in Castle Shannon.
According to police, Lina Vuga, 9, was last seen in the custody of her mother, Marike Vuga.

Authorities said Lina was to be picked up at school last Wednesday by her father, but was not there when he arrived. Her mother, Marike Vuga, had contacted the school to let officials know that her daughter would not be coming to school. Neither Marike Vuga nor Lina have been seen since.
An arrest warrant is active for Marike Vuga for concealing the whereabouts of a child, police said. Marike Vuga may be driving a green Jeep Cherokee with a Pennsylvania license plate of FHR-9628. She is a white woman, age 46, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds.
Lina is biracial, 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs approximately 107 pounds.
Anyone who comes into contact with Lina or Marike Vuga, or who may know their whereabouts, is asked to contact the Allegheny County Police Department at 412-473-1251.
Weeks later, mother still looking for son’s hit-and-run killer
Mar 21, 2016 04:28 PM EDT
Police are still looking for the driver in a hit-and-run accident that killed a man in Plum last month.
Brandon Erb, 36, was killed when he was struck as he was walking to the grocery store on Greensburg Road near the Lincoln Beach turn.

“He was funny,” said Beth Park, Erb’s mother. “He was a good friend to his friends.”
Erb was taken off of live support in February, nine days after he was hit by the mirror of a truck.
“His C1, C2 and C3 (vertebrae) were fractured and his skull was separated from his spine. He had no response to any kind of stimulus,” Park said.
Allegheny County police told Channel 11 they are investigating the case as a hit-and-run.
Park believes that someone knows what happened and is withholding information.
“Whether it’s someone who saw their co-worker’s truck, or maybe a garage fixed and replaced a mirror,” Park said.
Park said she will continue to work with county police until her son’s killer is brought to justice.
Dixon leaving Pittsburgh to take over at TCU, his alma mater
Mar 21, 2016 04:06 PM EDT
Jamie Dixon is leaving Pittsburgh to become head coach at TCU, where he played in the 1980s.
Scott Barnes, Pittsburgh's athletic director, said Monday that Dixon was taking the job at TCU and had already met with Panthers players to tell them.
FREE APPS | NOW | FACEBOOK | TWITTER
Barnes said there had been several conversations with Dixon since Pitt was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament last week. The AD said he "learned that Jamie's heart and Jamie's head was really moving toward TCU."
The 50-year-old Dixon was under contract at Pittsburgh until 2023. There was no official confirmation Monday from TCU, which a week earlier fired Trent Johnson with two years left on his contract after he won only eight Big 12 Conference games and went 50-79 overall in his four seasons.
TCU is 8-64 in Big 12 games, with the losses coming by an average margin of 15 points. TCU was 12-21 this season, 2-16 in the league.
Dixon was 328-123 at Pitt, where he led the Panthers to Big East Conference regular season titles in 2004 and 2011 before they moved to the Athletic Coast Conference three years ago. Pitt was 21-12 this season, and lost 47-43 to Wisconsin on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Panthers twice won 31 games and went to the Sweet 16 three times in Dixon's first six seasons. But they haven't gotten that far in the NCAA Tournament since 2009, when they made it to the Elite Eight, and were left out of the field in 2012 and 2015.
Dixon first arrived at Pittsburgh in 1999 as an assistant with Ben Howland, and was promoted to head coach when Howland left for UCLA. Before that, Dixon was an assistant coach at Hawaii, North Arizona, UC Santa Barbara and a junior college in Los Angeles.
Dixon was a four-year letterman for the Horned Frogs and as a senior was a starting guard for their last NCAA tourney victory. They beat Marshall in the first round of in 1987 before losing to Notre Dame.
Dixon was inducted into the TCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He was a .451 career shooter on 3-pointers, which was the school record when he finished playing but is now tied for second-best for the Frogs.
The Frogs this season began playing in their new campus arena. The $72 million project was a complete renovation of the coliseum that was their home when Dixon was a player, including new locker rooms and team meeting rooms.
Their only senior this season was 6-foot-8 forward Devonta Abron, a former Arkansas transfer who started only six games after missing 2013-14 because of a torn Achilles tendon.
Junior guard Kenrich Williams missed all season after microfracture knee surgery. Their top scorers, all sophomores, were Chauncey Collins (12.3 points per game), Malique Trent (11.6 ppg) and Vladimir Brodziansky (9.7). Trent led the Big 12 with 2.1 steals per game.

McKeesport teacher’s assistant pleads guilty to having sex with students, says she’s a ‘pedophile’
Mar 21, 2016 03:27 PM EDT
A McKeesport Area School District teacher’s assistant accused of having sex with four students pleaded guilty Monday to statutory sexual assault.
Channel 11’s Renee Kaminski reported that Michelle Mellinger, 49, entered a guilty plea Monday afternoon, and at one point, referred to herself as a pedophile.
Mellinger was arrested last October for having sex with four teenagers, all students in the McKeesport Area School District, during the 2015 school year. The teens ranged in age from 15 to 17. At the time, Mellinger was working as a special education teacher’s assistant at the district’s high school.
Her victims were not in court for the plea agreement, but their testimony was read to the judge, Kaminski reported.
Mellinger admitted to using texts to plan the trysts at her apartment in White Oak, actually picking up and driving each of the students there for sex. Kaminski reported that Mellinger texted one of the victims that he was on her “bucket list,” and in another, she wrote, “Wow, you look amazing. I just became a pedophile.”
She also admitted to one of the victims, “I prefer younger people to older people.”
Last week, Michelle Mellinger’s ex-husband, William Mellinger, was charged with molesting three girls at a friend’s house and at his house in White Oak.
William Mellinger worked as a custodian for the McKeesport Area School District, but according to school officials, he had been off the job for a year.

'Top Chef' winner, restaurateur Paul Qui charged with assault
Mar 21, 2016 03:25 PM EDT
Renowned Austin chef and restaurant owner Paul Qui faces a misdemeanor assault charge after police responded to a report of fighting at his East Austin home.
Officers arrived at Qui's apartment just before 8 a.m. Saturday after a friend of Qui's calling from outside the apartment told police that Qui was fighting with his girlfriend, an arrest affidavit said. An officer said in the affidavit that they could hear "a lot of banging around in the apartment" and "yelling and screaming" inside.
The friend asked Qui to open the door to the apartment, the affidavit said. When Qui complied and stepped outside, the officer said "he had blood all over his face, arms, legs and clothing," which consisted of boxer shorts and a tank top. Qui was immediately handcuffed, according to the affidavit.
The officer also said in the affidavit that the apartment was "in complete disarray, and furniture and glass were broken" or turned over throughout the home. He said he also saw "blood smeared on the walls and the floor."
A woman inside the apartment was clutching a small boy, the officer said in the affidavit. She told police that she and Qui had been dating for a year and living together for eight months.
According to the affidavit, she said that Qui had invited some friends to the apartment the night before and that "they were all indulging in cocaine, Xanax, alcohol and marijuana." She said Qui invited her to join them and she "had a couple of drinks."
But Qui became jealous and accused his friends of flirting with her "and enticing her into having group sex," she told police. According to the affidavit, Qui kicked his friends out of the apartment before he "became enraged and started knocking over furniture, shelves, tables and breaking glass."
The woman said she grabbed her son and a few things in an attempt to leave, but that Qui stood in front of the door and pushed her away or to the floor each time she tried to leave, the affidavit said. She told police that Qui threw her against walls and doors and that she suffered pain in her hip, knee and arm. The officer said he noticed a "fresh cut on her right forearm and bruising on her upper arms" and that the right side of the woman's jaw was slightly puffy and swollen, the affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, Qui confirmed to police that he did become angry with his girlfriend, saying it was because she was flirting with his friends and agreed to have group sex. He also admitted to police that he did not allow his girlfriend to leave, but he said it was because he wanted police to see the damage done to the apartment and "to tell his side of the story," the affidavit said. Qui also told police that the woman did not assault him.
He faces two misdemeanor charges: one for assault with injury (family violence) and the other for unlawful restraint. Bail had been set at $15,000 for the assault charge and $5,000 for the restraint charge, but Qui was released from Travis County Jail on bond.

A hilarious text mix-up about a newborn led to a sweet moment between strangers.
A woman who intended to text family members about the birth of her baby accidentally texted a complete stranger.
Deorick Williams posted the interaction on his Facebook page, and it quickly went viral.
Williams’ number was included in a group text from the woman that read, “We are at the hospital. Having a baby today! She has dilated to between 5-6.”
Williams congratulated the family and told them they had the wrong number, but the texts kept coming.
Williams received a photo of the newborn captioned “7 lbs. 11 oz.”
Instead of just ignoring the texts, Williams replied: “Well I don’t know y’all but me and the boys will be thru to take (a) picture with the baby.”
Williams came through on the promise. He and his brother showed up at the hospital to see the family and the baby, and they even brought gifts with them.
“What a blessing these two guys were to our family. They were so sweet and kind to do this. You 2 are great guys and thank you for giving to someone you didn’t know,” the woman posted on Facebook.

Anti-Defamation League redirects $56K in Trump donations to anti-bias efforts
Mar 21, 2016 02:13 PM EDT
A prominent Jewish organization will "redirect" tens of thousands of dollars donated by Donald Trump in an effort to combat his "penchant to slander minorities, slur refugees, dismiss First Amendment protections and cheer on violence," in his bid for the White House, the organization announced.
Over the last decade, Trump and his foundation have donated approximately $56,000 to the Anti-Defamation League.
"These undoubtedly were sincere gifts," said Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of ADL. "But in light of the recent campaign, we have decided to redirect the total amount of funds that he contributed to ADL over the years specifically into anti-bias education programs that address exactly the kind of stereotyping and scapegoating that have been injected into the political season."
In an op-ed published Sunday by Time magazine, Greenblatt said the Jewish community has long focused on promoting tolerance and diversity, "values that seem at odds with Trump's message on the campaign trail."
The announcement comes as Trump prepares to address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a well-known pro-Israel lobbying group, during its annual policy conference Monday evening.
The donated funds will go toward expanding ADL's "No Place for Hate" educational program in 10 regions: New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Atlanta, Houston, Denver, San Diego, San Francisco, Arizona and Las Vegas.
"We are taking this step to demonstrate that, even as the campaign has surfaced ugly rhetoric, we can reach higher," Greenblatt said. "Even as (Trump's) campaign has mainstreamed intolerance, we can push back on the hate and evoke our better angels not just with words, but with deeds."

Teen helps stop robbery during job interview, gets hired
Mar 21, 2016 11:52 AM EDT
A man who attempted to rob a Popeye's Famous Fried Chicken restaurant in New Orleans on Saturday was arrested after police said a man who was interviewing for a job at the eatery intervened and stopped the robbery.
Police said Pablo Ciscart, 50, entered the restaurant around 1 p.m. Saturday and grabbed an unknown sum of money when an employee opened the register to give him change, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported. Manager Danyanna Metoyer blocked Ciscart from leaving the restaurant by standing in front of the door.
"We hadn't made hardly any money. He wasn't going to take the $300 to 400 we probably had made. We needed our money," she told CBS News.
While Metoyer blocked the exit, Devin Washington, 18, got up from the table at which he was interviewing for a job with the manager and “bent (Ciscart’s) arm back” in order to stop the robber before the authorities could arrive, according to CBS News. Washington told CBS News that he was unsure if Ciscart had a gun, but he “wasn’t scared.”
Police arrested Ciscart on a robbery charge. Metoyer told CBS News that Washington was going to get the job before the robbery, but he secured it with his heroics.
"You're hired. You earned it,” Metoyer said Washington was told.
