New Haven History
New Haven has a rich and varied culture. New Haven was founded in 1678. Its land was called Quinnipiac until 1678. Quinnipiac was ruled by the Native Americans who lived in small villages and survived on maize and fisheries before the Dutch settlers entered the land. They set up small trading units with the help of the local inhabitants. However the Dutch did not settle there. New Haven was declared as a part of Connecticut colony in 1664. In 1701, it was made the co-capital of Connecticut.
1784 saw the incorporation of New Haven as a city. Roger Sherman was the first mayor of New Haven. The dawn of 18th century saw emergence of New Haven as a progressive city. A Yale graduate by the name of Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and started the gun making factories in New Haven. The industrial progress thus began from Eli Whitney's efforts. New Haven still honors Eli Whitney by naming the 18th century as the 'Whitneyville Era'. There are numerous buildings, parks and museums that are named after the famous Eli Whitney.
During the American Civil War, New Haven flourished because of the company that supplied arms and ammunitions to the allies.
