Lansing History

Lansing is located at the center of the state of Michigan, known as Mid-Michigan.

Hugh Howard discovered the city in 1790 while sailing with a canoe. In 1825, more exploration of this place took place. What is a city now was then a thick forest. In 1836, two New Yorkers laid demarcations to Lansing. This demarcation is now known as REO Town.

The two New Yorkers went to Lansing, New York and made sale interests of the plots of land they had demarcated in Lansing, MI. Some 16 people bought the land, without knowing that what was promised never existed in the first place. The New Yorkers had apparently promised them a township with 64 blocks containing a church, school and parks.

Upon reaching the place, the group of 16 people realized they had been tricked, because what they saw was nothing but a vast floodplain. They stayed on rather than going back, and this is how it began. From a group of 16 people, more people started coming in.

Lansing's claim to fame came in 1847. The state of Michigan wanted to relocate the capital of Detroit to another place. Detroit was close to Canada, where at that time British colonists were harbored. The British had captured Detroit in 1812, but America re-took Detroit in 1813.

Out of many cities surveyed to be a potential capital, Lansing won, because of its location in the center of Michigan.

A major part of the city was formerly Lansing Charter Township, which has been done away with and now called only Lansing. There are some land areas that have been attached to the city. These areas are from Eaton County. They are located in two townships - Delta Charter Township and Windsor Township. Both these townships are located in Eaton County, yet they are a part of Lansing.

Lansing City is the home of the Grand River. It flows through the southern part of the city.
