Kansas City Major Streets and Roadways

Most of Kansas City follows the grid system that is centered in the downtown area. The center of the grid is where Main Street and the Missouri River meet. The river divides the streets that are going from north to south. These streets are given names. Main Street divides all of the streets that are going from east to west. All of these streets are numbered.

Most of the city is all situated on a clear cut grid. However, there are some exceptions to this rule that may make it a bit difficult to find the things you are looking for. There are some tips that you can implement to make travel easy. For one, remember that approximately ten blocks will make up one mile. This will help you if you have to use a map to get around the city. Also, keep in mind that Broadway is south of the river, and it is thirty miles away.

When you travel outside of the city into the suburbs, things will get a bit more confusing. The suburbs will have a numbering system that is completely different than the one you will find in the city. It may take you awhile to get used to this fact, however, if you study a map, you will get to learn the suburban areas in due time.
