Richmond Major Streets and Roadways

The city of Richmond is encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288. It is a city that is located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64.

The street grid for the city was laid out in 1737. The current Richmond downtown is located slightly west on the slopes of Shockoe Hills. The Downtown Expressway, which is a toll road, runs right through the city. The Virginia Commonwealth University is located between Belvidere Street and Interstate 195 and 95. Some of the most affluent areas in the city include those on Main Street, Boulevard, Broad Street and VCU. Interestingly, the city started the first successful electric car system at the beginning of the century.

Most of the large streets in Richmond have a direction from Northwest to Southeast. These include Cary Street, Leigh Street and Dock Street among others. The Brook Road and the Meadowbridge Road run from North to South.

Take the Hilliard Road or the Brook Road to reach Belmont Park and the Three Lakes Park can be reached by Wilkinson Road. Some of the other roads and streets in the city include Dickens Road, Basie Road, Hermitage Road, Woodman Road and Wistar Road.
